The torque converter in an automatic transmission serves several key functions:

Torque Multiplication – At low speeds (e.g., during acceleration), it multiplies engine torque to improve vehicle launch performance.

Smooth Power Transfer – Allows the engine to keep running while the vehicle is stationary (no need for a clutch like in manual transmissions).

Fluid Coupling – Uses transmission fluid to transfer power from the engine to the transmission, reducing shock and vibration.

Automatic Disengagement – When the vehicle stops, the torque converter prevents stalling by allowing slippage between the engine and transmission.
